On the Kalam Cosmological Argument

چکیده

This paper examines the Kalam cosmological argument, as put forward by William Craig. Craig infers the existence of a personal God from the supposedly finite past of the universe. The temporal finiteness of the universe is based upon philosophical arguments for the presumed impossibility of an actual infinity of past events and is confirmed by two lines of scientific evidence. The arguments against an actual infinity if valid prove too much, placing undue limitations on God. Moreover, the arguments themselves are dubious. Although the concept of an actual infinity may lead to conclusions that are counter-intuitive, the impossibility of the actual infinite has not been demonstrated. The scientific arguments for a finite past the big bang singularity and the second law of thermodynamics are examined. It is found that there are still various seemingly plausible alternatives to a finite past. Big bang cosmology contradicts Craig's philosophical conclusions at a few points. The status and value of scientifically-based arguments for the existence of God are briefly discussed.

Cohen on the Kalam Cosmological Argument

Yishai Cohen raises three related objections to the kalam cosmological argument . Firstly, Cohen argues that, if the argument against the possibility of an actual infinite, which is used to support the kalam cosmological argument, is sound, then a predetermined endless future must also be impossible . Secondly, Cohen argues that the possibility of a predetermined endless future entails the poss...

A response to a Platonistic and to a set-theoretic objection to the Kalam cosmological argument

The first premise of the Kalam cosmological argument has come under fire in the last few years. The premise states that the universe had a beginning, and one of two prominent arguments for it turns on the claim that an actual infinite collection of entities cannot exist. After stating the Kalam cosmological argument and the two approaches to defending its first premise, I respond to two objecti...

Cosmological argument in proving the existence of God from Imam Khomeini's (RA) point of view

This article reviews Cosmological argument in proving the existence of God from the viewpoint of Imam Khomeini (RA). At first, various views to the existence of God are reviewed and then its etymology will be reviewed. Cosmological argument proves God through universal premises about truth and world and and the Movement Argument, Casual Argument and Necessity and Possibility Argument are dif...

Causation, existence, and creation in space-times with non-trivial topology

The Kalam Cosmological Argument is perhaps the most solid and widly discussed argument for a caused creation of the universe. The usual objections to the argument mainly focus on the second premise. In this paper we discuss the dependency of the first premise on the topological structure of the space-time manifold adopted for the underlying cosmological model. It is shown that in chronology-vio...
